Tastes like: brown sugar, hazelnut, milk chocolate
Ratnagiri Estate, Bababudangiri
Ratnagiri means Pearl Mountain, and it sits at the top of a mountain range in the Western Ghats region of India. It’s such named for the giant silver oaks which tower over the estate, and provide a canopy of shade, underneath the coffee plants grow. The Patre family has been farming this land since 1920, and Ashok, the third generation, now oversees a blend of traditional farming, with practices picked up from his various travels in other specialty-coffee producing countries.
The estate is to all intents and purposes an organic/biodynamic farm, and also has official Rainforest Alliance certification. It houses over 48 recorded bird populations, along with monkeys, wild boar, leopards, tigers, and on occasion, elephants. The family, the team, and the environment seek to live in harmony, which is reflected in the ecological practices being used here. The quality is testament to the drive for excellence being married to the requirement to protect and maintain the lush environment in which this coffee is grown & processed.
This is chocolate-forward coffee, but there’s plenty more going on. You may well get hints of hazelnut & brown sugar, but plenty of toffee and cocoa, and even some green apple and raspberry flavours. It lends itself to espresso, mokapot, AeroPress and cafetière, but it’s jolly pleasant in filter & pourer brewers too!
